Youth Groups Increasingly Impatient Over Climate Inaction

Support the Race Against Racism!

The 3rd Annual Race Against Racism will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Montpelier High School!    The Race Against Racism is a state-wide annual anti-racist event, organized by youth from several Vermont high schools. All are welcome to a public rally, comprised of a short list of notable speakers, and lots of live music and performances beginning at 10:45. An optional 5k run or walk will begin at 11:30 on a scenic loop through the city of Montpelier. The goal of the event is to further a conversation surrounding racial justice in Vermont and to ensure the fight for racial justice is visible and accessible to all.   Runners and walkers include many high school sports teams from around Vermont, their classmates, and community members of all kinds. The Vermont Youth Lobby needs your help to plan a series of actions that might finally persuade Vermont lawmakers to pass serious and bold climate legislation this year!     We are holding our first planning meeting of the year with three goals in mind: Grow the movement by recruiting Youth Lobby Officers from as many high schools as possible. Consider how we might help support and promote upcoming climate activism – in particular, the Global Climate Strike on Sept. 20th-27th. Begin planning our own climate actions for the upcoming year, which may include: Working directly with Vermont Lawmakers to organize a Youth Climate Congress that will meet in the Statehouse for a big media event in November.  The goal of the event would be to develop a plan that might convince the legislature to declare a climate emergency. Join the Race Against Racism!

The 2nd annual Race Against Racism is a youth-led community event held at Montpelier High School on September 23rd, 2018, beginning at 11:30. The event starts with a 5K run/walk through the city of Montpelier. Throughout the event, there will be local vendors vending food, including pizza from Woodbelly Pizza. After the race is completed, the performance portion of the event will begin, featuring activists, artists, musicians, and performances. Performers include Soundcheck and A2VT. If you would like to attend the rally instead of running and show your support for equality in VT, you can plan on arriving at 12: 00; the speakers will begin shortly thereafter. BECOME A CLIMATE LEADER Register for the Vermont Youth Climate Summit: The aim of the Vermont Youth Climate Summit is to educate high school students on the impacts of climate change through peer-to-peer learning. Encouraging students to take action on an issue that is highly relevant to their generation is a key mission of the Summit. Challenging both high school and college students to think deeply about the issue allows for a greater impact and understanding of the common role that youth play in the climate movement. It is the goal of the Vermont Youth Climate Summit to connect students of all ages and to empower them to become climate leaders.
