Join the Youth Climate Strike!

Earlier this year, Greta Thunberg and 46 other youth activists issued a call to everyone around the globe to join them in a massive climate strike on September 20th. The Climate Strike will kick-off a week of mass, actions between Sept 20-27. In most countries, the youth strikers have chosen Sept. 20th as the day of their Climate Strike, while in a few other countries they have chosen Sept 27th. In the US, the coalition of youth strike groups, the Future Coalition, chose September 20th as the date.

Students from the Vermont Youth Lobby are standing in solidarity with Greta Thunberg and her courageous call to Strike for the Climate.  There is no doubt we are in the midst of a climate crisis and that now is the time to take bold and comprehensive action to change the course of our futures together.

We strongly encourage students from across Vermont to work collaboratively with their school administration to take a break from “business as usual” and plan an event that highlights the tremendous need to take more bold and comprehensive action to address this growing crisis.  Whether it be an assembly, a teach-in, a speakout, or some other collective gathering we encourage you to plan an event unique to your school community and culture.

The organizers of the event have put together a great website with many useful resources and ideas for planning your event.  https://vermontclimatestrike.org/  Organizers would love to hear from as many schools as possible about what they are planning and are building a wonderful map designed to show all of the local events https://vermontclimatestrike.org/events-map/.  There are also a number of general strikes planned in places such as Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland, Randolph and a number of other towns and communities that students may consider attending, particularly if they are unable to plan a local event.
